Artist Spotlight: Playdough

Posted in Artists, Community, Magic, music, Spotlight with tags , , , , , on March 21, 2011 by artlovemagic

Tell me a little bit about yourself..

I’m Playdough. I’m an Emcee and producer. I’m a solo artist as well as part of a crew called Deepspace5. I’m a family man and I live in Arlington.

As you have grown within your talent, what inspires you to create?

I love making music. I love having an idea and working on it to it’s completion. I love all the different styles and cadences and melodies and moods that music allows us to explore. Sometimes it’s personal and changes you, sometimes it changes others that hear it. Meeting and talking with people that have been effected or enjoy my music is a big part, but I honestly couldn’t do anything else. Music is infused into my life and is a part of me.

How long have you been producing your craft and why did you begin this form of expression?

I’ve been rapping since I was in the 6th grade. Hip-Hop really grabbed me. I was always drawn to music, but hip-hop specifically spoke to me in a way that I never really made a conscious choice to do it. One day I looked up and I was knee deep in it. It just kind of sucks you in and makes you a part of the culture.

What do you ultimately want to accomplish with your talent?

I want to continue to take it to people who need and enjoy it. Worldwide. I want get people thinking. At the end of the day I want people to hear the Life in my music. I have nothing to offer people outside of Christ and what I’ve learned from Him. I hope my music reflects the Life and eternal hope that comes through knowing Him.

Outside of your artistry, what other interests do you have?

I’m a huge family man so if I’m not doing music I’m probably playing around with my family. I also love basketball and am forever supporting the Mavs. I’m also a big fan of reading so it’s nothing strange to find my nose in a book.

What was your first experience with ArtLoveMagic?

My first experience was meeting some of the ArtLoveMagic family at some of my shows. I started to meet people associated with them and was really impressed by the type of people they were. Lots of Love, support and genuine encouragement. The more people I met the more I saw the talent and how deep it goes. Everyone involved is ridiculous in their own way. I’ve got nothing but Love for you guys and am honored that people of your talent appreciate what I do. In my mind somehow it adds validity to what I do.

What web address can one go to to view more of what you do?

How can someone contact you?

On my website is probably the easiest, but I’m on the usual sites, too. Try or or you can ask your mom, she’s got my number.

Goat & three6t “Highest Low” official video release

Posted in Community, Deep Ellum, music, Spotlight, videos with tags , , , , , , , on April 16, 2010 by artlovemagic

Hey all.  Deb here.

A few months ago, I blogged about Goat & three6t’s latest CD release party to introduce “Mileage” to the world.  The album is a true hip hop work of art, involving a complex story and seriously righteous beats.  This, plus the crazy effort and heart that Goat puts into his music made this work not just something to bob your head to, but to open your mind with.

Here I am again to give you my take on the duo’s latest video release of “Highest Low”, just one of the stellar tracks available on the record.

“How low will you go to get as high as you can be?” – This is the first thought provoking inquiry that Goat poses to you, the listener.  What’s your answer?  Mine was, “Oh wow.  That’s REAL.”  To me, it brings images of junkies in the street injecting ignorant bliss, or kids getting screwed up and pushing limits like so many red buttons that they knew they should never have pushed.

The video has images of its own for you to absorb, many including familiar faces to the Dallas art & music scene brandishing tattoo’s with similarly familiar words such as ‘corruption, ‘greed’, ‘lust’ and ‘hope’.   All of these human experiences that we ourselves are faced with on a regular basis certainly made me feel the music and its meaning.  Another message I found was the message to be thankful for how lucky we really are, even if only to remember the food that’s in our fridge and our family being there for us at the end of what can be a long and difficult ascension back up.

GOAT is a mnemonic device of sorts.  The letters stand for something, that something being “Grades of Absolute Truth”; but also Goat himself embodies such a device to me.  For those of you checking for what I might mean, let me help you out a bit.  A mnemonic device is a device that is used to help somebody remember something they are supposed to be learning.  We are all supposed to be learning right now, even if it is just remembering absolute truths that we were born to live.

Go check out the video for “Highest Low” and see if you can remember one or two of those truths right now.

Underground 2010

Deb here.  Last year during the undeniable success of Underground 2009, I was personally falling in love.  This Dallas art scene is a renaissance of paint splashing, poets screaming and guitars wailing.  My heart muscles are sore from the beating, from the giving love AND the receiving.  Thank you ArtLoveMagic, and a warm welcome to Underground 2010!

This year I am looking forward to several things, but I’m not going to let all of that get out right here, right now.  This is a climactic event and I will not rob you of the surprise and awe you’ll feel when you walk in on January 30th, 2010.  There are a couple of constants in this show, one of which being that we will be again be introducing you to new artists from the streets of Dallas that are truly brilliant and purely underground.  The other is that this spectacle will again be held at SouthSide on Lamar in the Janette Kennedy Gallery and connected artist quarters.  Two stages, 30 + artists, DJ’s, hip hop and graffiti wrapped up in that ArtLoveMagic energy.  The pre-sale tickets are on sale now for half off the door price.  See the website for details, and take advantage of this deal!  With the powerful production collaboration between ArtLoveMagic Founder, David Rodriguez and Deep Ellum street artist & musician, IZK Davies and myself, I am looking to sell this show OUT.

Expect the unexpected.  That makes the unexpected expected and leaves nothing out of the realm of possibility.  Yeah.

Hip Hop Helps Heal (H4) Rawked

Last night ArtLoveMagic partnered with H4 for their second fundraising event, Mend the Home. Last year they raised funds for Susan G Komen and this year they raised funds for Genesis Women’s Shelter.

The night was a beautiful mix of hip hop, paint, and souls. A long time dream was fulfilled for Dave Rodriguez who was staged an painted live with hip hop artist, Playdough. Click on our photos on the right to see the pics from the night.

I was talking with Damascus last night and I shared with him my hope that the rennaisance of Deep Ellum will be one not only of art, but art that changes lives and the whole culture of Dallas.
Bring it, friends. We will rawk your face off.

Playdough joins artlovemagic’s ILLUMINATE

Posted in PR, Shows with tags , on March 26, 2009 by artlovemagic

So I’m pretty psyched as my favorite local rapper just added to our April 11th illuminate show. Playdough will be joining us for a feature 30 minute set on the main stage.

I’ve been going crazy listening to his music since IZK hooked me up with a copy of Lonely Superstar a few months back. For my money this is one of the best MCs on the planet- and yes I totally mean that. Wake up Dallas. You’re backyard is FULL of talent.
